Glaucoma

Worldwide, it is the second leading cause of blindness

Glaucoma's a disease that affects the optic nerve and involves loss of ganglion cells from the retina in a pattern that is characteristic of Glaucoma.

When untreated glaucoma will lead to irreversible damage and results in loss of field vision, objects can be "lost" or not fully seen. This can then lead on to blindness. Glaucoma is separated into two broad terms, Open Angle Glaucoma and then Closed Angle Glaucoma.

Closed angle glaucoma appears suddenly and is normally painful. Loss of vision can quickly progress but because of the discomfort involved the patients usually seek medical attention sooner rather than later, stopping any permanent damage.

Open angle glaucoma, chronic glaucoma progresses more slowly and patients may not notice that they have vision loss until after it is too late.

Glaucoma is often only recognized when the disease is quite advanced. Once lost, damaged vision can never be recovered.

The Zeiss GDx laser scanner can detect glaucoma up to five years before the visual field loss.
